So here it is, Robert Darnton’s verdict on the FBTEE STN database – and what a verdict it is: ‘It is a prodigious accomplishment and a joy to use’.
Better still, the forum chosen, the IHR’s ‘Reviews in History” site has afforded me the chance to respond to his discussion of our differing methodologies and approaches. You can find my comments at the end of Professor Darnton’s review.
I would like to thank Robert Darnton here once again for the trouble he has taken with his review. It is a great honour to have such a ringing endorsement from someone who is simultaneously the greatest living expert on the STN archive; one of the founding fathers of the discipline of Book History; one of the most distinguished scholars of the enlightenment; and such an important public intellectual.
